FAO's Integrated Monitoring Initiative for SDG 6 (IMI-SDG6) works together with Organization for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS) to assess environmental flow requirements and to disaggregate SDG indicator 6.4.2 (level of water stress) by basin and sub-basin. A dedicated workshop was held from 15 to 16 January 2025 in Dakar, Senegal.
The workshop contributes to the FAO's efforts to support Member States in monitoring and achieving the SDG targets and focuses on the methods and tools applied by the Organisation for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS) to assess environmental flow requirements and to spatially disaggregate indicator 6.4.2. This activity was organised by FAO in collaboration with OMVS within the context of IMI-SDG6.
In 2024, the two organisations agreed to strengthen the collaboration and to focus on developing a functional model for the analysis and management of water resources in the Senegal River Basin and its sub-basins, considering the importance the basin has for the economies of the concerned countries. For this purpose, three water management experts from the OMVS Secretariat in Dakar have been trained by FAO in developing an operational model for the analysis and management of water resources in the Senegal River Basin, including the assessment of the environmental flow requirements and of SDG 6.4.2 (level of water stress) by sub-basin and by season. During the workshop, the OMVS experts presented the results of the water stress analysis carried out using the WEAP plugin prepared by FAO in collaboration with the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI). The primary objective of the workshop was to discuss the ways OMVS management and other policy makers could effectively benefit from these assessments.
Overall aim of this work is to enhance the integrated and sustainable management of water resources in the Senegal River Basin.
