ASARECA international conference - Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) in East and Central Africa

ASARECA photo group An international conference was organised by ASARECA, on Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) in East and Central Africa (20-22 October 2010). It appears that much research is on going about PES in this region, at high level, as demand is rising. Regional and national policies mention Sustainable Land Management , creating space for PES development. But specific frames are lacking. Efficient possible partners are identified by FAO, with whom Kagera TAMP may implement PES in each country. Most projects up to date focus primarily on nature conservation and biodiversity, carbon sequestration and water management. The latter however, seems to be very challenging.  So far, quality product / organic food labeling is not quoted as important PES modality. However, the conceptualisation of PES is to be improved, for  there is a confusion with ‘usual’ natural resources management; components such as voluntary payment or reward are underestimated. Private funding is generally lacking. Many projects fail to reach maturity, remaining in the designing and conceptual phase.

A “learning alliance” about PES is taking form in the region, FAO has launched an e-community of practice in form of a  D group, to support it: you may find at this electronic address the possibility to:

  • discuss items,
  • build partnerships
  • consult useful , recent documentation
