Knowing water better: towards fairer and more sustainable access to natural resources - KnoWat

The KnoWat project selected for the Initiative Dakar 2022 at the World Water Forum

16/03/2022

The project Knowing Water Better was selected as part of the Initiative Dakar 2022 at the World Water Forum. The Initiative Dakar 2022 generates commitments and actions to accelerate progress, in particular towards the achievement of the SDGs. Among other things, the initiative is aimed at building community projects that target access to potable water and decent sanitation.

The certified projects by the Initiative Dakar 2022 aim at achieving tangible results to be presented at the Forum. The projects selected by the Initiative meet the Forum's challenges and general criteria transparency, operationality, replicability, efficiency, multi-partner commitments, and adaptation to climate change and gender issues.

The goal of the KnoWat project is to strengthen water governance processes in Rwanda, Senegal and Sri Lanka through building capacity in water accounting, and developing and testing a methodology for the assessment of water tenure. In Rwanda, the assessment of water users is updated in the context of increasing competition among water users in the Yanze, Muvumba and lower Akagera catchments. In Sri Lanka, the project analyzes different strategies to manage water in a more sustainable manner in the Malwathu river basin. In Senegal, the project will seek to better understand the interlinkages between water and land tenure in the delta of the Senegal river basin.

The innovative KnoWat approach integrates water accounting and water productivity assessment based on remote sensing technologies with water tenure assessment. This improves the accuracy of the water accounting and, helps recognize the uses of all persons, including vulnerable groups who might have unrecognized water tenure arrangements to ensure no one is left behind
