Currently sugar cane farmers in the United Republic of Tanzania receive lower prices than they could, despite high domestic demand, because of high processing costs.

On the 26th and 27th of March, The MAFAP team participated in the first Monitoring, Learning and Evaluation Community of Practice meeting organized by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

During his mission from 26 to 28 March, the MAFAP Manager met with representatives of the Commission in charge of the agricultural sector to discuss the main achievements of MAFAP in Burkina Faso and Mali and the potential for future collaboration on MAFAP in Western Africa.

Rice farmers and traders in Uganda receive higher prices thanks to existing policies. However, rice consumers also pay higher prices since they do not receive subsidies designed to offset high producer prices.

The results of the MAFAP on measuring the public expenditure on support for agriculture have been used by the OECD in their Investment Policy Review of the OECD for Tanzania.

MAFAP participated in an FAO mission to Lesotho from 11-23 March to assess the possibilities for incorporating a MAFAP policy review in the formulation and monitoring of the CAADP Compact and National Agricultural Investment Plan (NAIP).
