WaPOR, remote sensing for water productivity

Data Collection Missions for Crop Mapping in Algeria's Mitidja Plain - Season 2

29/11/2024

As part of the implementation of the activities under the WaPOR Phase 2 project, funded by the Government of the Netherlands, a data collection mission for crop mapping in the Mitidja Plain's season 2 was conducted from 19 to 29 November 2024. This initiative builds on the earlier fieldwork carried out from 29 April to 13 May 2024.

Led by the National Office of Studies for Rural Development (BNEDER), this mission complements the results of season 1 to produce a comprehensive crop map for the year 2024. Three technical teams were deployed to:

  • Complete questionnaires,
  • Collect georeferenced data,
  • Capture geotagged photos of crops and water points.

The teams also engaged with farmers, agricultural services, and irrigation perimeter managers to enhance the quality of the collected data.

Ultimately, the mapping of the Mitidja Plain will serve as a crucial foundation for:

  • Improving the water use model co-developed by the IWMI and the WaPOR digitalization team (Product 3 of the project, focused on applicable solutions and tools),
  • Supporting any studies or research related to water productivity in this strategically important region.

This initiative represents a significant step toward better understanding and optimizing the management of water and agricultural resources in Algeria.
