WaPOR, remote sensing for water productivity

pyWaPOR training held in Rabat to support WaPOR-based applications in Morocco

28/03/2025

From 24 to 28 March 2025, a five-day training on the use of pyWaPOR, a Python package developed to facilitate the use of WaPOR data for evapotranspiration modelling, was held in Rabat, Morocco. The training is part of the activities under a recently signed Letter of Agreement (LoA) between FAO and the Centre de Ressources du Pilier II du Plan Vert Maroc (CRP2)—recently renamed Pôle Digital—aiming to support the implementation of field applications based on WaPOR data in Morocco.

The training was attended by national experts and technical staff who learned how to use pyWaPOR to download, prepare, and process WaPOR data to run the ETLook model and generate high-resolution maps of actual evapotranspiration (AET), net primary production (NPP), and water productivity (WP) for specific areas of interest.

Participants also explored the integration of in-situ data into the model and the use of croptype maps to analyze water productivity by crop and by season. These exercises were tailored to respond to the specific needs and requests of the participants, reinforcing practical knowledge and local ownership.

This activity supports Morocco’s efforts to increase water productivity in agriculture, building on the work already carried out during the first phase of the WaPOR project.
