WaPOR, remote sensing for water productivity

QGIS Training kicks off at the University of Jordan

27/02/2025

The first activity under the Letter of Agreement (LoA) signed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the University of Jordan began on 16 February 2025 with a two-week intensive training on Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS).

The training "GIS and Remote Sensing using QGIS" is designed for Jordanian and Palestinian participants and aims to establish a WaPOR knowledge hub for the region within the University. The training runs from 16 to 27 February 2025 at the newly refurbished GIS lab of the University and provides participantswith essential skills to utilize GIS and remote sensing data for irrigation water management and agricultural water productivity enhancement.

The training focuses on practical applications such as land use/cover mapping, water resource management, and environmental monitoring.

As part of the FAO WaPOR project, data from the North Jordan Valley is used for GIS exercises, while satellite imagery covering Jordan and Palestine enables trainees to process datasets from different geographical regions. By the end of the course, participants will be able to apply QGIS to their projects and contribute to data-driven decision-making in their respective fields.

The training is conducted by experts from the University of Jordan, led by Prof. Jawad Al-Bakri, Eng. Azzam Alananbeh, and Eng. Sondos Bani Fawwaz, with support from Eng. Mais Atiyat, Eng. Shrouq Saideh, Eng. Fakhri Qouzah, and Dr. Mohammad Rasool.
