28/10/2024

FAO’s open-access WaPOR portal for monitoring water productivity through remote sensing was showcased at the OECD Conference on “Sustainable Agricultural Productivity to Address Food Systems Challenges” held on 28 October 2024 in Paris. During a session moderated by Spiro Stefanou (USDA ERS), Jiro Ariyama, FAO International Water Expert, highlighted how WaPOR helps farmers assess water productivity, identify high-performing fields, and adopt practices leading to optimal production outcomes. He also emphasized the importance of considering sustainable water availability for long-term productivity improvements.

The conference brought together global policymakers, experts, and practitioners to discuss trends, challenges, and innovations in sustainable agricultural productivity. FAO experts contributed insights on SDG 2, climate targets, and Agricultural Innovation Systems (AIS), stressing the need for productivity gains and natural capital accounting. WaPOR will also feature in the upcoming issue of the Sustainable Productivity Growth Coalition Compendium.
