Working Session on Water Use Tool and Dynamic Dashboard Between IWMI and the WaPOR Digitalization Unit

The FAO, in partnership with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), held a hybrid working session in Algiers for members of the WaPOR Digitalization Unit (CNWaPOR). This session was part of IWMI’s action plan in Algeria, aiming to develop a collaborative model for determining water needs. The session took place on 24 December 2024.
Key topics addressed during the session included:
- Status update on the use of the model.
- Data updates for June 2024.
- Discussion on the new dashboard interface.
Discussions covered the update methodology and the necessary commands to execute. Particular attention was given to the use of WaPOR data resolution, especially the distinction between the 100 m and 20 m levels for agricultural plots larger than one hectare. Additionally, areas for improvement in the dashboard were identified, such as integrating root zone moisture monitoring and enabling 10-day forecasts for crop water requirements, based on successful results already obtained in Tunisia.
An important point raised was the utilization of 2024 crop mapping results to generate biomass and water productivity data, facilitating parcel-level irrigation monitoring.
As a next step, it was agreed to organize internal working sessions for CNWaPOR members to further enhance their proficiency in using the model.
