Training on WaPOR in the Sudano-Sahelian Belt to cope with water scarcity in agriculture

The Sudano-Sahelian region of Africa is facing serious environmental and socioeconomic challenges posing a real threat to food security and poverty in many countries. Indeed, desertification exacerbated by climate change, affects the livelihoods of millions of people who suffer from the lack of availability and access to clean water resources.

In this context, FAO is actively supporting these countries to address water scarcity and water shortages in agriculture, through water productivity assessment and the introduction of sustainable natural resources management practices.

A series of training workshops on the use of WaPOR and its applications will be organized through the months of August and September 2021 in Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali and Senegal. These workshops which will take place both virtually or in presence, will gather representatives from national Governments, Academia and Research Institutions who want to improve their understanding of water productivity and learn about the WaPOR portal and its practical applications. They will also learn how to interpret the water productivity results calculated from the WaPOR database and use them for policy-making and actions on the ground to help addressing water scarcity and drought risks.

The workshops are implemented in the framework of the project “Improving land and water productivity in the Sudano-Sahelian belt” as part of the Africa’s Great Green Wall.
