Achieving Food Security in the future while using water resources in a sustainable manner is a major challenge for us and the next generations. Agriculture being a key water user, a careful monitoring of water productivity in this sector and exploring opportunities to increase it are required. The FAO has developed a publicly accessible near real time database using satellite data that allows the monitoring of agricultural water productivity at different scales.

This database is the backbone of the WaPOR project that, now in its second phase, works with ten partner countries to build their capacity in the use of WaPOR data for its different applications, and to generate solutions to local challenges linked to water and land productivity as well as water management.

WaPOR Database Methodology, Version 2 Release

WaPOR Version 2 was launched in June 2019 based on extensive internal and external validation and quality assessment. This report describes the methodology used to produce the different data components of WaPOR Version 2 at the 250m (Level 1), 100m (Level 2) and 30m (Level 3) resolution, as made available through WaPOR Version 2 release.

Water Accounting and Auditing: A Sourcebook

FAO, together with other organizations, recommends water accounting and auditing as being fundamental to initiatives that aim to cope with water scarcity. This sourcebook wants to provide advice on the application and use of water accounting and auditing, helping users planning and implementing processes that best fit their needs.

WaPOR quality assessment on the 2nd version of the database

WaPOR Version 2 was launched in June 2019 based on extensive internal and external validation and quality assessment. This report, developed in collaboration with ITC-Twente  and the other partner of the FRAME Consortium, provides a quality evaluation of the WaPOR V2 evapotranspiration, biomass and water productivity data across Africa and the Near East, currently distributed through the FAO's WaPOR portal.
