Strengthening Agro-climatic Monitoring and Information System (SAMIS)

New project will scale-up climate adaptation information for the agricultural sector

Farmers, agricultural researchers, experts, and policymakers across Lao PDR have easier access to more and better info than ever before thanks to Laos Climate Service for Agriculture (LaCSA).

Critical for planning the future of agriculture and forestry amid climate change, Lao PDR’s capacity in modeling Agro-Ecological Zones (AEZ) and Land Resources Information Management System (LRIMS), has been highlighted at the international level with assistance from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

After five years of activities, the GEF project “Strengthening agro-climatic monitoring and information systems to adaptation to climate change and food security in Lao PDR” (SAMIS) is now scaling up to the new “Scaling-up local and national level decision making for climate resilience in the agricultural sector of Lao PDR”, also known as SAMIS-2, financed by GCF.

The meeting was organized by the Department of Planning and Finance in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) with the collaboration of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) and the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare (MLSW).

Mr. Souksamone Pathammavong, DDG at the DOPF in MONRE explained that “the project has the potential to contribute greatly to the modernization of the meteorological sector, to the improvement of information for farmers, and to the achievements of the targets of the 9th NSEDP. Mr. Phommy Inthichack, DDG of DOPC MAF, underlined the importance of information for good agricultural planning.

Representing FAO at the meeting, Mr Chanthalath Pongmala, Assistant FAO Representative, explained that should have the scope of the workshop is to maximize discussion and collaborations for the implementation of the project.

The government was also represented by Mr Phonesavanh Saysompheng, Director General of the Social Welfare Department.
