ScaleWat will present the Global Dialogue on Water Tenure during the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture 2026
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will participate in the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) 2026, to be held in Berlin, Germany, from 14 to 17 January 2026. The forum will bring together political leaders, researchers, civil society and international organizations to address global challenges at the intersection of water scarcity, food security and climate change.
FAO’s engagement at the GFFA will focus on the role of agriculture as part of the solution to water scarcity, promoting integrated approaches to water governance, sustainable resource use and equitable access to water for food production. Through high-level and expert-led sessions, FAO will contribute evidence, policy perspectives and practical experiences drawn from its global and regional work on land, water and agrifood systems.
Within this framework, FAO's project "Scaling up capacities for responsible governance of water tenure"(ScaleWat), supported by the German Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity (BMLEH) will contribute to the organization’s participation by hosting the Expert panel “Sharing water fairly for food and water security: the Global Dialogue on Water Tenure”, scheduled for 16 January 2026, from 11.00 to 13.00 UTC+1 at City Cube Berlin. The session will focus on FAO’s Global Dialogue on Water Tenure by bringing together global, national and local perspectives on how water tenure arrangements are defined, assessed and applied in practice.
The agenda focuses on the role of water tenure in addressing competing water uses, strengthening coordination across sectors, and supporting fair and sustainable access to water for food production. Drawing on country experiences, tools and assessment results, the multiactor panel will identify key governance challenges, policy entry points and practical recommendations to inform future work under the Global Dialogue, contribute to regional and national processes, and support preparations for the 2026 United Nations Water Conference.
