Water Tenure Experts Meeting: Advancing the Global Dialogue on Water Tenure
FAO Headquarters and online, 27-28 May 2025
The increasing demand for water, coupled with the projected impacts of climate change, poses a major challenge to all countries in terms of fair and sustainable water allocation in the context of food security. Understanding water tenure is fundamental to the sustainable and equitable management of water resources.
The FAO Committee on Agriculture, at its 28th session in 2022, recommended that FAO undertake an assessment of water tenure arrangements and initiate a Global Dialogue on Water Tenure. The Dialogue aims to identify principles for the responsible governance of water tenure through an inclusive consultative process with Member States, civil society, academia and international organizations.
The two-day workshop will validate the roadmap for the Global Dialogue on Water Tenure and review elements on responsible governance of water tenure that will form the basis for the consultations. The workshop will provide a platform to share knowledge and explore pathways to strengthen collective action to advance the responsible governance of water tenure.
