FAO work
FAO has worked with the International Collective in Support of Fishworkers, on articulating social protection and early warning systems to deploy anticipatory action to respond to shocks in the Fisheries Sector in the Caribbean, African and Pacific Small Island Developing States. FAO is developing a global database that encompasses all social protection programs targeting and reaching the fisheries and aquaculture sector.
Knowledge exchange and dissemination
FAO is promoting South-South and Triangular Cooperation to disseminate results and share lessons learned on extending coverage and scaling up social protection programmes to the fisheries sector. In 2023, FAO organized a South-South cooperation workshop in Brazil. The event provided a platform for countries to share ideas, strategies, and experiences in designing and implementing social protection programmes tailored to the fisheries and aquaculture sector. This included a dedicated day on the implementation of closed season unemployment benefits for fishers, followed by three days of dialogue with participating countries sharing their experiences on social protection for fishers, a panel of fishers sharing challenges in accessing programs and benefits, and perspectives from international organizations also working on social protection and decent work.
