Fisheries management is not just about stocks. It’s about people. Social dimensions need to be embedded in fisheries governance and management to achieve fisheries that are ecologically sustainable and socially equitable.

À l’heure où plus de 138 millions d’enfants dans le monde sont encore privés de leur droit fondamental à une enfance protégée, la 6ᵉ Conférence mondiale sur l’élimination du travail des enfants réunit à Marrakech les gouvernements, les organisations internationales, les partenaires sociaux, la société civile et le secteur privé pour accélérer l’action collective.

This week, FAO took part in the 6th Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour, held in Marrakech, Morocco. The conference, which opened on 11 February, featured a dedicated side event titled Transforming fisheries and aquaculture: new tools to eliminate child labour. 

Every year on 21 November, the world celebrates World Fisheries Day to recognize the crucial contribution of fishers and fish workers to food security, employment, and sustainable development. The day serves as a reminder of the urgent need to protect their human and labour rights, ensuring fair, safe, and dignified working conditions across the sector.

Child labour continues to affect millions of children globally, with 61% involved in agriculture, including fisheries and aquaculture. This session moves from awareness to action, spotlighting real-world solutions to eliminate child labour in aquatic food systems. Join youth leaders and FAO partners as they tackle root causes and unveil the new FAO-ILO Guidance, paving the way for safer, more sustainable livelihoods.

À l’occasion de la Journée mondiale de l’alimentation, l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture (FAO) et l’Organisation internationale du Travail (OIT) ont lancé de nouvelles Directives politiques sur l’élimination du travail des enfants dans les pêches et l’aquaculture. 
 Cette publication entend aider les gouvernements, les employeurs, les travailleurs, la société civile et les autres partenaires à s’attaquer aux causes profondes du travail des enfants dans les chaînes d’approvisionnement des produits aquatiques. 

Pour célébrer son 80e anniversaire, la FAO a lancé une initiative visant à reconnaître des personnes ou entités ayant apporté une contribution significative à la pêche et à l'aquaculture durables. Les candidatures sont ouvertes jusqu'en juin 2025.

Une formation internationale visant à renforcer les conditions de travail dans le secteur de la pêche s’est achevée à Isla Cristina, en Espagne. Pendant cinq jours, plus de 30 participants – responsables d’administrations des pêches, inspecteurs du travail, conseillers techniques et spécialistes de 19 pays – ont pris part à des sessions techniques, des activités pratiques et des échanges interinstitutionnels.

From 19 to 23 May 2025, the Isla Cristina National Maritime Training Centre (CNFM) in Huelva, Spain, hosted the International Advanced Course on “Promoting Decent Working Conditions in Fisheries”, jointly organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM). The course was held with the support of the Social Marine Institute in Spain (ISM) and in collaboration with the Spanish National Institute for Safety and Health at Work (INSST).

Au Cabo Verde, plus de 1 500 femmes, connues sous le nom de peixeiras, se consacrent chaque jour à la vente de poisson, nourrissant leurs familles et leurs communautés. Chaque jour, ces femmes surmontent de nombreux défis pour préserver une activité clé pour nourrir leur pays. 

 L’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture (FAO) et le Monterey Bay Aquarium ont lancé des activités en Tunisie pour préparer la mise en œuvre d’un nouveau projet visant à renforcer la protection sociale des pêcheurs artisanaux. Ces efforts s’inscrivent dans le cadre du projet plus large « Expansion de la couverture et de l’adéquation de la protection sociale dans le secteur de la pêche », qui se poursuivra jusqu’en février 2028.

A new inter-institutional working group has been created in Cabo Verde to support the development of inclusive social protection measures and strengthen the resilience of fishers and fish workers in the face of climate change and economic shocks.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Monterey Bay Aquarium today inked a deal that will kick off a collaboration to improve social protection for small-scale fishers in Tunisia.

Join this seminar to explore together a cross-sectoral approach to social protection and fisheries. The presenters will provide an overview of the new “Blue Social Protection Handbook” which offers practical knowledge to those who are working at country level on the social protection and fisheries sectors in search of innovative ways to promote sustainable fisheries while reducing human vulnerability. You will also be provided with an overview of the World Bank’s as well as partners´ emerging country engagements in this area.

Welcome to this newsletter showcasing key activities, workshops, and events from this year. Notably, we are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries, along with important highlights on advancing social protection initiatives for the small-scale fisheries sector.

For one day and a half, experts from government authorities, FAO, the International Labour Organization (ILO), regional intergovernmental organizations, and a range of non-state actors (workers’ organizations, employers’ organizations, small-scale fishers’ organizations, non-governmental organizations, and academia)  discussed and deepened the understanding of international and regional standards for decent work in marine fisheries, fostered collaboration among agencies, and exchanged country experiences on that topic.

La FAO et l’OIT ont organisé un atelier de deux jours afin de mettre à jour leur guide sur la lutte contre le travail des enfants dans les pêches et l’aquaculture. Ce document clé et complet vise à fournir aux décideurs politiques, aux organisations de pêcheurs, aux institutions sectorielles et au secteur privé des recommandations et des solutions pratiques pour lutter contre le travail des enfants dans ce secteur.

This event provided a platform to reflect on the achievements, challenges and lessons learned of the SocPro4Fish project and explored future directions for social protection in the fishing sector. 

La pêche artisanale est essentielle pour les moyens de subsistance de la population mondiale, mais elle est confrontée à des défis tels que la pauvreté, la surpêche et le changement climatique. La protection sociale apporte une aide par le biais de l'assistance, de l'assurance et des interventions sur le marché du travail, mais l'accès est souvent limité, en particulier pour les femmes. Le projet SocPro4Fish de la FAO soutient l'expansion de la protection sociale. Parmi les principales réalisations, citons le soutien aux allocations de chômage pendant les saisons de fermeture, la création d'une base de données mondiale sur la protection sociale, le renforcement des capacités dans plus de 50 pays et la promotion de la coopération. La protection sociale est essentielle pour une transformation bleue inclusive qui ne laisse personne de côté.
