“Difference does not mean inequality or inferiority-superiority. None is superior, none inferior in nature. Can we say which is better — fire or water? Birds, butterflies or animals? Ants, cats or elephants? Seas, mountains or villages? Day or night? Winter, summer, rains or spring? Similarly, in our families and communities, everyone has his/ her own place, role and importance.” Kamla Bhasin

A sustainable future is only possible when women and girls are given meaningful and equitable access to opportunities and resources, and the same voice for negotiations. This belief was key to Ms. Kamla Bhasin’s life and work.

Throughout her illustrious career including her time at FAO, Kamla worked to createa world free of stereotypes and discrimination that is diverse, equitable and inclusive, particularly in the field of agriculture and allied sectors in India and the region. On International Women’s Day - 8 March 2022, we would like to celebrate her contribution to ‘breaking biases’. We in the UN family continue to be inspired by her life and work.

On this occasion, FAO in collaboration with UN Women is happy to release a series of stories from the field on women in agriculture and allied sectors #KisiSeKumNahi (literal meaning: Not less than anyone)
