FAO India organizes multisectoral initiatives for World AMR Awareness Week 2024

25/11/2024

From 18-24 November 2024, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) organized a series of impactful events to commemorate World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (WAAW’24).

On 20 November, FAO in collaboration with the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, organized a multisectoral workshop in Delhi titled “Addressing AMR through One Health Collaboration”. The session welcomed over 50 participants from government, private sector, veterinary professionals, food safety experts and environmental scientists. The workshop focused on the complexities of AMR through engaging panel discussions framed within a One Health approach. It also provided a platform to share insights, identify priority areas for intervention, and strengthen collaborative networks, contributing to the forthcoming National Action Plan on AMR 2.0.

On 21–22 November, FAO organized awareness workshops at the Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (LUVAS) and the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS). These sessions educated over 80 veterinary students at each university about AMR risks across animal health, fisheries, and agriculture. Interactive group work and quizzes reinforced the importance of a One Health approach and actionable steps to reduce antimicrobial usage in livestock, poultry, and fisheries, encouraging future professionals to address AMR challenges holistically.

In addition, FAO supported a series of awareness workshops at various ICAR institutes and state universities, including Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University (Andhra Pradesh), Central Agricultural University (Aizawl), ICAR-NBFGR (Lucknow), ICAR-CIFT (Visakhapatnam), Kamdhenu University (Gujarat), and ICAR-CIFRI (Gujarat). These sessions provided crucial insights on AMR and its containment, engaging diverse stakeholders in the scientific community.

FAO ECTAD India also organized an awareness session for FAO staff on 22 November. Over 30 participants attended an insightful presentation on India's AMR scenario, exploring policy measures and strategies for mitigation. An interactive AMR quiz added an engaging, interactive dimension to the event, fostering a deeper understanding among FAO colleagues.

These initiatives collectively underscored FAO’s commitment in India to addressing AMR through multisectoral collaboration, education, and actionable steps, fostering a united effort to combat this global challenge.
