Objectives: To enhance India’s capacity to develop sub-national (state) climate finance investment programs and projects linked to adaptation and resilience priorities for the agriculture sector3903

Description: The GCF Readiness project enhances India’s capacity to develop sub-national climate finance investment programs and projects linked to adaptation and resilience priorities for the agriculture sector. GCF presents a significant opportunity to complement the actions and the climate finance resources of the Government of India in contributing to achievements of its NDC. Well formulated investment plans in the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sectors at the sub-national level have the potential to attract climate finance from a wide range of actors to specifically address the climate priorities of the state while ensuring a range of co-benefits. For instance, the investments in agroforestry as part of the AFOLU sector, has the potential to deliver faster returns on capital invested while contributing to food and wood security.

The Readiness Support Project addresses the following three barriers:

  • Fragmentation in planning and monitoring climate action in agriculture sector
  • Limited experience in accessing climate finance
  • Limited private sector engagement for climate action in the agriculture sector

The project is being implemented in close coordination with the National Designated Authority (NDA) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India.

Donor: Green Climate Fund (GCF)

Expected Outputs:

  • Sub-national agriculture and climate investment plans
  • Strategies to engage with the private sector on building climate resilient agriculture sector
