Boaššu FoodLab at the World Food Forum
17 - 21 October 2022, FAO Rome
Under the 2022 theme “Healthy Diets. Healthy Planet.”, the World Food Forum (WFF) took place from 17 to 21 October 2022 at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome, Italy.
In the framework of the World Food Forum, a delegation of more than 50 Indigenous Peoples’ leaders, chefs and artists from the seven socio-cultural regions of the world participated in the global discussions for the future of food, youth action, science and innovations and investment.
The BOAŠŠU Food Lab is a nomadic tent and mobile kitchen from the Sámi people of Norway. From 17 to 21 October it hosted different activities led by Indigenous Peoples and supported by the FAO Indigenous Peoples Unit to share knowledge and influence the policy debate on the transformation of food and knowledge systems.

Episode 1: Indigenous Youth working together for a better future
Today we meet Josiane from the FAO Indigenous Peoples Unit and Tecumseh Ceasar of the Matinecock Turkey clan, Montaukett, and Unkechaug Decent. Together they discuss the strong bond built with FAO throughout the years to push the voices of the Indigenous Youth forward.
Episode 2: "This Campaign is our Vision"
Josiane from the Indigenous Peoples Unit in FAO meets up with Makanalani Malia Gomes, Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) and Filipina, the Global Indigenous Youth Caucus co-chair and Malachi Johnson, a Gooreng Gooreng Traditional Owner from the Great Barrier Reef and also a member of the Indigenous Youth Caucus. Malachi is Gooreng Gooreng and South Sea Island, descendant from Port Curtis and Coral Coast region on the Great Barrier Reef. The three of them explored the subject of Indigenous Youth and Peoples' knowledge and food systems and talked about the Indigenous Youth Campaign launch at the World Food Forum.
Episode 3: Indigenous Peoples' Food Systems are Game-changers
In this final episode, Josiane from the FAO Indigenous Peoples Unit meets Mariah Gladstone Blackfeet (Piikuni) and Cherokee (ᏣᎳᎩ) from the base of the Backbone of the World in the United States. She is the founder of "Indigikitchen", an online teaching tool dedicated to revitalizing traditional Native foods.
Josiane, Makanalani and Malachi continue their conversation at the World Food Forum about the Indigenous Youth Campaign and why it is meaningful.
