This CFS side-event will highlight the relevance of indigenous peoples’ contribution to the global debate on the transformation towards more sustainable food systems. It will provide an opportunity for indigenous leaders, the Global-Hub on Indigenous Peoples’ Food Systems, governments’ representatives, and UN agencies to present evidence-based information on indigenous peoples’ food systems and their resilience and sustainability elements.

There has been a long-lasting need to promote an enhanced recognition of indigenous peoples’ and their food systems and a need to improve knowledge sharing on their food systems and traditional knowledge by providing a platform for knowledge holders and academia. In response to this need, during the 27th session of FAO’s Technical Committee on Agriculture (COAG) held in September 2020, FAO, together with Member States, launched the Global-Hub on Indigenous Peoples’ Food Systems, as a knowledge center that brings together indigenous experts and organizations, universities, research centers, UN agencies, and FAO experts. The Global-Hub aims to gather knowledge to inform the policy debate on sustainable food systems and bridge the gap between academic and indigenous peoples’ scientific and ancestral knowledge.

Indigenous peoples, and the Global-Hub on Indigenous Peoples’ Food Systems have joined forces to provide evidence-based information and response elements rooted on their traditional knowledge, to contribute to the 5 actions tracks of the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit. In this regard, in 2020, FAO, together with indigenous peoples organizations and the Global-Hub on Indigenous Peoples Food Systems, held two dialogue sessions with the UN Food Systems Secretariat to discuss how to enhance indigenous peoples’ contribution to the Summit. The main outcomes of these sessions will be presented during this side-event. The FAO Indigenous Peoples Unit is organizing  this side-event in collaboration with the Government of Finland, the Global-Hub on Indigenous Peoples’ Food Systems, the UN Permanent Forum of Indigenous Issues, the Asian Indigenous Peoples Pact, the Sámi Parliament,the Rome Group of Friends of Indigenous Peoples and the International Fund of Agriculture.

The event will showcase the indigenous peoples’ roadmap towards contributing to the 2021 United Nations Food Systems Summit and the first draft of the White Paper/ Whipala Paper on Indigenous Peoples’ Food Systems that is to be shared by the Scientific Group of the UN Food Systems Summit.  The 2021 UN Food Systems Summit provides a timely opportunity to forge interconnected actions and commitments to implement collective and more coherent actions to deliver improved food systems outcomes that accelerate Indigenous Peoples’ Food Systems. 

Expected outcomes:

• Showcase evidence-based information on indigenous peoples’ food systems and their elements of resilience and sustainability.·
• Present the White Paper/Whipala paper of Indigenous peoples’ food systems and indigenous peoples roadmap to the UN Food Systems Summit.
• Bring to the discussion the ways further to enhance indigenous peoples’ participation in the global debate on sustainable food systems and climate change.
