In 2015, FAO collaborated with Indigenous Peoples' leaders and Youth to establish six pillars of work and two focus areas for achieving a world free from hunger and malnutrition, as per FAO's mandate. This initiative is in line with the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the FAO Policy on Indigenous and Tribal Peoples. In 2017, the Indigenous Youth Global Caucus requested the addition of a new pillar focused on Traditional Knowledge and Climate change. This request prompted FAO to expand its efforts.

In 2019, the Indigenous Peoples Team became the Indigenous Peoples Unit which now leads the work of FAO with Indigenous Peoples to:

  1. Implement the 2010 FAO Policy on Indigenous and Tribal Peoples in compliance with the 2007 UN Declaration on Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).
  2. Provide strategic advice and advocacy guidance on Indigenous Peoples to FAO Senior management, decentralised offices and technical divisions.
  3. Work with member countries, Indigenous Peoples, academia and research to bridge the gap between evidence sharing and policy making.
