Because of their expanse and fishing potential the inland waters of Latin America are of major importance for the economy of the region and the diet of the population. However, in the development of freshwater fisheries there are considerable differences between one country and another. Probably there are many reasons for this. In addition there is also a scarcity of physical and biological information at present available regarding many of these waters. In fact, knowledge of the biology of the various organisms and also of the environment where fishing is practised is an essential basis for initiating any development policy. This document represents an analytical collection of the information relating to the main inland waters of Latin America.

Las aguas continentales de América Latina son, por su extensión y potencial de pesca, muy importantes para la economía de la región y dieta alimentaria. Sin embargo, en el aprovechamiento de las aguas dulces se observa una considerable heterogeneidad entre país y país. Probablemente, numerosas son las razones a la base de estas diferencias, pero una de las principales es seguramente la escasez de las informaciones físicas y biológicas actualmente asequible para muchas de estas aguas. Efectivamente, el conocimiento de la biología de los varios organismos y también del medio ambiente donde la pesca se efectúa es una base imprescindible para iniciar cualquier política de desarrollo. Este documento tiene como fin el de recoger sintéticamente, informaciones relativas a las principales aguas continentales de América Latina.
