REPORT of the FIFTH SESSION OF THE COMMITTEE FOR INLAND FISHERIES OF AFRICA. Fisheries Report No. 283.

Managing inland fisheries

The final report of the Committee for Inland Fisheries of Africa (CIFA), held in Cairo, Egypt, from 15 to 20 January 1983, is presented. Major topics considered were (1) status and prospects of extension services in African inland fisheries; (2) prevention of post-harvest losses; (3) fisheries development of Lake Victoria; (4) aquaculture development; (5) synthesis of African reservoir fisheries; (6) water pollution. Among the recommendations of the meeting were: (i) a regional project patterned on the model of the FAO/DANIDA/Norway programme for the integrated development of small-scale fisheries in West Africa is also required for East and Central Africa; (ii) the newly established Cooperative Research Programme on Fish Technology in Africa should closely cooperate with extension services to promote reduction in post-harvest losses; (iii) endorsement of action programme for the development and management of Lake Victoria fisheries and the draft proposal for the investigation and development of pelagic fisheries of the lake; (iv) priority should be given to aquaculture systems in which feeding is based on the increased use of organic fertilization and the association of fish farming with all forms of animal husbandry; (v) CIFA activities on African reservoir during the coming intersessional period should be mainly concerned with study of small pelagic fishes in African natural lakes and reservoirs and review of preimpoundment studies; (vi) pollution studies should be included in regional or sub-regional fishery projects as appropriate.
