2024 events

In collaboration with the Municipality of Rome, this high-level event on Wednesday 24 April includes tree planting and inauguration of the educational itinerary at the Global Library of Trees and Flowers, in Rome’s Doria Pamphilj park. FAO forestry experts, each representing one of the seven different geographic areas of the world, will conduct guided tours to explore the park through its dedicated web app.

Join IFSA as we explore how young individuals can contribute fresh perspectives and creative solutions to addressing challenges and promoting the protection, restoration, and sustainable use and management of forest ecosystems.

Join the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs at a virtual Global Policy Dialogue highlighting innovations for sustainable forest management as well as better ways to improve monitoring and data-gathering related to forests. Experts from the UN Forum on Forests Secretariat and FAO will share best practices for achieving Sustainable Development Goal 15, Life on Land.

Join FAO on Thursday 21 March 13.00-18.00 CET for this hybrid series of technical sessions to find out about some of the outstanding innovations that are helping to protect forests and unlock the many benefits they bring. New solutions are transforming forestry, allowing more accurate mapping and monitoring, empowering Indigenous Peoples to be the guardians of forests, promoting ecosystem restoration and driving the development of more sustainable wood and forest products.

Hungary 18-24 March: International Day of Forests at the Kindergarten Romonya

The Romonya nursery school celebrated the world's forests from 18 to 24 March 2024. The children enjoyed a visit from ornithologist and a walk in the forest to learn about birds, animals and forest. Tree saplings were shared with the children and village community.

Malaysia 20 March: Learning about the conservation of endangered trees in Malaysia

Year 9 students of Sri KDU International School Klang and Sri KDU International School Subang Jaya learned about the conservation of endangered trees in Malaysia, spearheaded by Sime Darby Property at the Elmina Rainforest Knowledge Centre.

The National Centre for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification held a forest restoration exhibition in Riyadh and produced a series of videos showcasing the work of forest champions from local communities in Saudi Arabia. Also launched was Saudia Arabia's National Forest Inventory: a comprehensive effort to assess and nurture the kingdom's forests, ensuring their sustainable future.

Every year, the Forum secretariat holds a special event to celebrate the International Day of Forests at United Nations Headquarters in New York which attracts participation from representatives of Member States, regional organizations, members of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests and non-governmental organizations.

FAO, in close cooperation with the Russian Federal Forestry Agency, will hold a scientific and practical conference on the digitalization of the forestry sector, artificial intelligence and biotechnology in forestry, as well as advanced approaches to forest restoration. The event will also present innovations in protecting forests from fires, pests, and diseases, monitoring and taxation solutions, and forest climate projects.

Join the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe to commemorate the Day on 21 March 2024. Beginning at 10:00 CET, "Forest Talk: Innovation 4 Climate" in Palais des Nations, will feature a discussion with experts on innovative uses of wood components. At 12:00 CET, the symbolic ceremony "Glacial Threads: From Forests to Future Textiles," will take place, where a glacier fleece made from innovative wood-based fibers will be draped over Michelangelo Pistoletto’s renowned ‘Rebirth’ sculpture.

In this ode to the tree, Carmelle Pilon explores the links between man and nature, nature and art, while questioning the notions of traces, time and memory through sensitive and profound observation. Her work focuses attention on the extraordinary intelligence of plant growth and the aesthetic perfection present in nature.

Finland 21 March: Ten thousand Finnish children celebrate forests by sowing pine seeds

Little plants will grow at school and nursery windows and will be planted outside when the winter turns to spring. The yearly event is organized by Finnish Forest Association since 1993.

 

A pop-up art exhibition and forest sounds installation "WALD.über.SEHEN" (Overlooking forests) in Dresden offers an opportunity to remind us of the connection between people and forests in the middle of the city. Opening from 2-9 pm on March 21 and 9 am-12 noon on 22 March.

Kenya 21 March: 100 ha Tree Planting Project Adopt A Forest

Perur Rays of Hope in partnership with the International Tree Foundation launched a 100 ha Tree Planting Project  (Adopt A Forest) at Kapkanyar Forest, Siyoi Ward, West Pokot County. We intend to restore and enrich the forest with indigenous 20,000 seedlings while we support the community and schools in agroforestry with 30,000 seedlings.  This is a 5-year programme to ensure success growth of the seedlings.

In a vibrant celebration FAO hosted an engaging event for children aged 10 to 13, emphasizing the crucial role of forests in our ecosystem. The event aimed to instill appreciation and sense of stewardship for forests among the young participants. It entailed an introduction to the significance of forests, water, and soil. It also underscored sustainable forest management, as a key to combating climate change and contributing to the prosperity and well-being of communities.

Nigeria 21 March: Tree planting and presentations

The 2024 IDF event was celebrated at a tree planting ceremony and academic presentations at the Centre for Climate Change and Forest Resources (CCCFR), Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, Nigeria

Organized by the National Forest Centre, up to 251 children and 25 teachers from secondary schools, primary schools and kindergartens from the area of Zvolen and surroundings took part in forest education activities. A student competition was also held in the Forestry and Wood Museum for 6 primary schools.

Innovative content-based, professional and cultural-artistic presentation of two new thematic trails - "Trail of Giants" and "Historical Forest" - and the tallest tree in Slovenia, in the City Forest in Pečovnik near Celje. Plus many more events.

Spain 21 March: Tree planting and raising awareness

The people of Valllesa de la Guareña gathered together, children, young and old, to plant holly trees, rooted cuttings of weeping willow, white poplar and cypresses. The planting was carried out in an area of the town, called El Caño, due to the two streams of water coming from an underground spring and which have not dried up, even in the driest times.

The FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific will be hosting a webinar titled “Forests and innovation, new solutions for a better world” to mark the Day on Thursday, 21 March, from 12:00–13:00 ICT. This regional event will showcase the significance of promoting sustainable supply and use of forest ecosystem services through innovations in the Asia and Pacific region, with a focus on how these advancements contribute to building a sustainable bioeconomy. The webinar will also focus on the relevance of innovations related to forest and tree products in providing alternatives to supporting sustainable livelihoods.

Fiji: Tree planting in coastal community and school

This year's celebration will be held in a coastal community on Viti Levu, involving the Nawamagi Village community and Conua District School, and will include a tree planting program on 21 March.

Theni, India: Tree planting and college campus competitions

The Theni Forest Division (Tamil Nadu Forest Department) and the College of Agricultural Technology jointly organized a tree planting programme where 50 saplings were planted. Competitions and prizes are awarded at the college campus by the chief guest of the event Mr. J. R. Samartha with a presidential address from Dr. G. Umapathy, College Dean.

The students of the College of Forestry, Navsari Agricultural University, are celebrating the International Day of Forest on 20-21 March with a quiz, painting and drawing competitions on the theme "Forests and Innovation."

Join FAO on Wednesday 20 March at 16:00 CET for an International Day of Forests event focusing on integrated fire management. The event will bring together a panel of international experts to discuss a pressing issue: how to best integrate science, technology and traditional knowledge in fire danger rating and early warning systems to improve fire management globally.

FAO and the Forestry Service of Kyrgyzstan planted trees in honour of the International Day of Forests. Over 200 seedlings of fast-growing trees such as catalpa, maple and sycamore were planted in the foothills on the southern outskirts of Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. In the future, this area will become a park zone.

Japan 18 March: Green Earth for the Future

Green Earth for the Future will be held at Umi-no-Mori Park (Koto-Ku, Tokyo) on the 18 March, on reclaimed land in Tokyo Bay, to spread the spirit of protecting and nurturing forests. Volunteers are sought to care for the trees that have been planted. Organized by the National Land Afforestation Promotion Organization, Forestry Agency, Forest Culture Association, supported by Asahi Shimbun Company and others. Inquiries: Forest Culture Association +81-3-5540-7686.

The Korea Forest Service, AFoCO Secretariat and the National Institute of Forest Science celebrated the 2024 International Day of Forests with diplomatic missions in Seoul.

Join IUFRO on 18 March 13:00-14:30 CET for the launch of a new evidence-based synthesis report on Europe’s wood supply in disruptive times. The report published by TEAMING UP 4 FORESTS, a science-business platform initiated by IUFRO and Mondi Group, analyses factors affecting future wood supply such as climate change, land use and policy developments. It also offers response options including technological and digital innovation and new value-added wood-based products.

On 14 March, this Forest Europe webinar will highlight innovations in the forest sector and address policy gaps, from a practice perspective. Selected start-ups and networks from Europe will showcase their activities in an Open Space session called “Room for innovation."

India: One school children, one tree planting programme

Over 350 free tree saplings were given to school children to grow at home or on the farm. This initiative from the Tamil Nadu Forest Department will award the best tree grower after one year of growth.
