International Mountain Day 2026 photo contest: Capturing life on mountain rangelands
From the high pastures of the Pamirs, the Andes, and the Hindu Kush Himalaya region to Mongolia’s vast steppe rangelands, mountain pastoralists have shaped life in these landscapes for generations.
Through seasonal movements, grazing practices and knowledge passed down over centuries, they care for animals, produce food and fibre products, and maintain healthy mountain rangelands that support biodiversity, agrifood systems and regulate water flows far beyond the highlands.
Yet these landscapes and traditions are at risk. Climate change, land degradation and shrinking access to grazing lands and water are threatening pastoralist livelihoods and the ecosystems they steward. Even so, mountain pastoralists continue to adapt, drawing on knowledge, mobility and resilience to respond to changing environments.
This year’s International Mountain Day contributes to the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026 and the International Year of the Woman Farmer 2026, shining a light on the environmental, social and cultural importance of mountain rangelands and pastoral systems.
To celebrate the day, we invite you to capture the people, landscapes, animals, traditions and practices that define life on mountain rangelands through your photographs.

THE CONTEST
The United Nations General Assembly has designated 11 December “International Mountain Day” (IMD).
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the coordinating agency for the preparation and animation of this celebration and host of the Mountain Partnership Secretariat, is organizing a photo contest (“the Contest”) within the framework of IMD 2026.
Mountain pastoralists: Sustaining rangelands, knowledge and livelihoods is the theme of IMD 2026.
The photo contest aims to celebrate life in mountain rangelands and the role of mountain pastoralists who, through their knowledge, mobility and care, raise animals, produce food and fibre, and steward these vital ecosystems. Drawing on Indigenous Peoples’ and local knowledge developed over generations, their practices help regenerate vegetation, maintain healthy soils, water flows and biodiversity, while supporting rural mountain economies and contributing to food security. As a contribution to the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026, IMD 2026 highlights the environmental, social and economic importance of mountain rangelands and calls for greater recognition of mountain pastoralists as custodians of ecosystems that sustain life from the highlands to the lowlands.
Participants are asked to submit:
(i) a photo portraying life on mountain rangelands (i.e. pastoralists moving herds across mountain landscapes; yaks, llamas, alpacas, sheep, goats or other animals adapted to mountain environments; seasonal migrations, transhumance and traditional grazing practices; Indigenous Peoples’ and local knowledge linked to pastoralism; women and youth shaping pastoralist livelihoods; the beauty, challenges and resilience of mountain communities; examples of natural fibres and food products; or innovative solutions helping protect mountain rangelands and pastoral ways of life);
(ii) the online entry form, explaining what your photo represents, where it is located, when it was taken, and why mountain rangelands and pastoral systems are vital to sustaining life and our planet.
