Conference: National Agency hosts event on mountain ecosystems

The National Agency of the Mountain Area, the focal point for Romania within the Mountain Partnership, in collaboration with the Mountain Economy Center of the Romanian Academy, the Mountain Forum of Romania and the National Association for Mountain Rural Development "Romontana", organized a conference as part of the Academic School of Montanology, on the occasion of International Mountain Day on Friday, 8 December 2023. The theme of the conference was "How do we preserve mountain ecosystems for future generations?"

The conference took place in a hybrid format, at the conference hall of the Romanian Academy - Mountain Economy Center CE-MONT in Vatra Dornei, as well as online. The following topics were addressed:

  • Restoration of degraded mountain meadows by Nardus Stricta and animal production during the grazing season (Case study: the Perșani and Bucegi Mountains)
  • Renaturation of the former sulfur exploitation in Călimani mountains: anthropogenic intervention versus natural dynamics
  • Economic development through the valorization of local resources in a circular bioeconomy system, the development of local agrotourism (Case study: Ilvelor Valley and Someș River)
  • National parks in the mountains of Romania as havens of peace and relaxation for future generations
  • Assessment of ecosystem services in the mountain area
  • Traditional Saxon gardens - reference agro-ecosystems for strategies

At the end of the event, there was an artistic programme supported by local artists from Bistrița-Năsăud and Suceava counties.
