FAO facilitates a workshop related to PSMA in Uruguay

05/12/2022

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) facilitated a participatory national workshop in Montevideo, Uruguay, from the 28 November - 2 December 2022.

The outcomes of this meeting will serve to develop a National Strategy and Roadmap to effectively implement the 2009 FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA), complementary international instruments and regional mechanisms to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The workshop was organised within the framework of the support provided under the Third PSMA Global Capacity Development Programme Support Project and Follow up Action to the 33rd FAO Committee on Fisheries and Aquaculture, funded by the Republic of Korea.

Over the five days, up to 20 participants from six different public institutions went through the primary obligations foreseen in international instruments to combat IUU fishing. Port State, flag State, coastal State and market State responsibilities were reviewed and crosschecked with current procedures in place in Uruguay.

Participants valued the workshop as an opportunity to discuss openly and cooperatively the international requirements. The resulting National Strategy and Roadmap will provide the basis for Uruguay to strengthen policy and legal frameworks, establish institutional arrangements, and support the monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) system consistent with the provisions of the PSMA.
