PSMA Parties revisit capacity development priorities

The fifth meeting of the Part 6 Working Group (Part 6 WG) of the Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) reviewed capacity development priorities for developing States and put forward recommendations for consideration by the upcoming fifth Meeting of the Parties (MOP5) to the PSMA, which will be held in Ecuador between 5-9 May 2025.

57 participants from 39 Parties to the PSMA, 2 participants from other FAO Members, 3 intergovernmental organizations and 1 international non-governmental organization participated in the fifth Meeting of the PSMA Part 6 WG, hosted by the Republic of Korea, which was held in Busan, on 23 October 2024.

The Part 6 WG welcomed the substantial contribution by the Republic of Korea to the Global Training Programme, which is financing 27 courses in the next three years, 16 of which will be delivered in Busan. The Part 6 WG recognized the critical importance training plays in developing and maintaining capacities of States for an adequate implementation of the PSMA.

The Fifth meeting of the Part 6 WG was held with funding by FAO and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea.

During the same week, the Republic of Korea hosted and funded the weeklong Second meeting of the PSMA Strategy ad hoc Working Group, the launch of the new FAO PSMA Training Hub in Busan, and the fifth edition of the FAO international course on fisheries port inspections in support of the Agreement on Port State Measures.
