Audio: Countries meet to tackle US$23 billion illegal fishing trade: FAO

30/05/2017

Illicit fishing costs the world up to US$23 billion a year, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Countries are meeting this week in Norway’s capital, Oslo, to define responsibilities under a June 2016 treaty that crackdowns on the practice.

This marks the first meeting of the 46 parties to the Agreement on Port State Measures to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (PSMA), who represent more than two-thirds of the global fish trade.

Sandra Ferrari sat down with Matthew Camilleri, an FAO Fisheries Liaison Officer, who outlined some of the challenges to implementing the accord.
