FAO assists Uruguay in fisheries MCS matters
Experts from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) returned to Montevideo, in Uruguay, to assist the country’s fisheries authorities in implementing the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) and complementary international instruments to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
Between the 7 – 11 October 2024, FAO experts and Uruguayan authorities worked on a monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) plan and an inspection plan, refining procedures and methodologies to reflect the country’s commitments in combatting IUU fishing. Both plans are expected to be concluded and adopted by the end of the year.
This work took place under a current project, funded by the Republic of Korea, which earlier this year looked at other procedures and guidelines to assist the country in better implementing the PSMA. This followed earlier work on the country’s regulatory framework.
