08/10/2024

Dr Shelley Catherine Clarke, an international consultant with the FAO Fisheries Global and Regional Processes Team (NFIFP), is one of this year’s recipients of the Japan Foreign Minister’s Commendation for her contributions to sustainable fisheries in Japan and internationally.

Dr Clarke currently leads the work that the FAO Fisheries Global and Regional Processes Team is carrying out in connection with the estimation of the magnitude and impact of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Dr Clarke received the award from Japan’s Foreign Minister, Yoko Kamikawa, at a ceremony in Tokyo honouring professionals who have made outstanding contributions to the promotion of public awareness regarding Japan’s foreign policy.

Dr Clarke, who is based in Japan, has spent many years advocating for managing sharks as a fisheries resource, breaking new ground in regulations for collecting better data, developing new stock assessment methods, and promoting techniques to reduce unintended shark catches.

Dr Clarke first went to Japan as a post-doctoral fellow at the National Research Institute of Far Seas Fisheries and later served as an editor of the Japanese Society of Fisheries Science. In these roles, she helped support the development of Japanese researchers who contribute to international forums.

From 2014-2019 she joined FAO’s Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ) Tuna Project as the technical coordinator for sharks and bycatch working with all five tuna regional fisheries management organizations around the world. Since 2019 she has contributed extensively to NFIFP’s broad portfolio on the development and implementation of international fisheries instruments, with a focus on traceability and combatting IUU fishing.
