Gender and Land Rights Database (GLRD)

The Gender and Land Rights Database (GLRD) is a FAO-developed dissemination platform to highlight the major political, legal and cultural factors that influence the realisation of women’s land rights throughout the world. It provides information about gender and land issues through 84 country profiles, land tenure statistics disaggregated by gender, and a tool to assess legal frameworks  for gender-equitable land tenure.

The country profiles analyze the extent to which national legal frameworks and policies and programs support the advancement of women or induce gender-differentiated access to land in 83 countries. Besides relevant country statistics, the country profiles contain analyses of national legal frameworks with respect to women’s property and land tenure rights, the status of ramification of international treaties and conventions, customary law and practices, and civil society organizations supporting gender-equitable land tenure.

The land tenure statistics include updated statistics disaggregated by gender, including distribution of landholders by sex and the incidence of landowners by sex, among others.

The Legal Assessment Tool (LAT) offers a scroll-down list of legal indicators for gender-equitable land tenure that focus on the elimination of gender-based discrimination in the constitution, in inheritance, nationality, property rights and access to justice among others. When selected the indicators reflect to what extent a country has incorporated them into its national legal framework.
