On the occasion of World Water Day 2023, 22 March, the FAO Investment Center, in conjunction with the World Bank, released a brief that features WaPOR data on the key topic of agricultural water management in the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon titled  “Irrigating from Space”.

WaPOR is FAO’s portal to monitor Water Productivity through Open-access of Remotely sensed derived data that assists countries in, among others, monitoring irrigation performance in near real time (every 10 days). Agriculture being the largest water user globally as well as in Lebanon, the chosen date for the release of the brief is not random. As the world water professionals and stakeholders gathered in New York for the midpoint of the water decade (2018-2028) at the UN 2023 Water Conference with a strong presence of the FAO, the brief adds to the conversation on how we can use satellite data for more sustainable use of increasingly scarce water resources in agriculture. The brief suggests that water managers and decision-makers consider tapping into the potential of satellite data, such as WaPOR data, to support their practices and decisions.
