FAO Land & water at the IUCN world conservation congress

Marseille, France | 3-11 September 2021

This week global conservation experts will convene at the IUCN World Conservation Congress to set priorities and drive conservation and sustainable development action. The IUCN’s 1400+ government, civil society and indigenous peoples’ member organisations will vote on major issues, resulting in actions which can guide humanity’s relationship with our planet for the decades ahead.

The IUCN’s 7 Congress’ themes (Landscapes; Freshwater; Oceans; Climate Change; Rights and Governance; Economic and Financial Systems; Knowledge, Innovation and Technology) include key issues relevant to the FAO’s work in Land and Water, such as land degradation neutrality, land tenure, drought and drought management, ecological restoration, earth observation monitoring for land degradation and sustainable cities, one water and one health, nature conservancy, biodiversity protection, climate adaptation and mitigation potentials, all of which fall under the framework of the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration.

FAO's Deputy Director-General Maria Helena Semedo will represent the organization in person at the congress, with Director-General QU Dongyu, present in virual participation at the High-level Dialogue on Agriculture and Land Health: The Common Ground Between Agriculture and Conservation.

FAO Land and Water Division Deputy-Director, Sasha Koo-Oshima will also speak at the Congress’ Commission on Environmental Law, providing IUCN and its Members with policy advice to drive conservation and sustainable development. The International Symposium on “Peace with Nature: Laws for Ecological Resilience” will feature FAO’s One Water One Health programme recognizing the important intersection between health, water and agriculture production.
