Drought emergency response to protect the livelihood of vulnerable households and populations in drought-affected woredas of the Tigray region – Ethiopia

Due to the failure of belg and delay of meher rains of 2008, three woredas of Tigray were affected by drought. The belg rains of 2008 totally failed and the meher rains that normally start in June were delayed and only started in mid July; these were erratic and very small in quantity. The  assessment mission indicated that with the exception of woredas in the central, north western and western zones, there has been poor rainfall which in turn has caused a poor performance in the belg, Azmera and Tsediya crop producing parts of eastern and southern zones of the region. The overall objective of the project was to provide basic livestock health interventions to protect the livelihood assets of the community and support the establishment of Community Animal Health Workers (CAHWs) and linkages with animal health posts, and improve and sustain community based animal health service and to save the lives of core breeding stock through the provision of survival feed.
