Emergency support to save lives, protect livelihoods and build resilience in drought-affected rural areas of Somalia

The food security situation in Somalia deteriorated dramatically in 2016. Farmers and pastoralists have most to lose when the rains fail: their food sources, income and assets. Pastoralists are struggling to keep their animals alive. The extreme dry conditions, water shortages and lack of pasture have made animals weaker, more prone to disease and less productive. Rural areas are where droughts hit hardest, where famines start, and where support must be focused; early action reduces the scale of this humanitarian crisis in the most vulnerable communities, while decreasing further humanitarian needs and recovery costs. The project increases the resilience to shocks and stresses through restored production capacity and value addition, diversified income sources, temporary employment, plant and animal pest and disease control, and protection of natural resources.
