Emergency support to vulnerable populations affected by drought and the effects of El Niño

The food shortage problems in Southern Madagascar in 2016 were a result of a cumulative process of the impacts of erratic rains since 2012. After 2011 (where agricultural production was good), the drought from 2012 to 2015, aggravated by the El Niño phenomenon (up to 80% crop losses, non availability of seeds, family assets sold, etc) coupled with insecurity (zebu theft) led to the deterioration of the situation. The mobilized capital and assets to cope with shocks have been depleated, decreasing purchasing power and increasing the vulnerabily of households. The project contributed to the reduction of food insecurity and increased the resilience of vulnerable farming households affected by drought and the effects of El Niño in the South of Madagascar.
