Ghina Mohammad Audi wants to make a difference. She is a motivated student from the Lycée Célestin Freinet in Lebanon. Together with her classmates, FAO, GMC Beats and schools in five other countries – Armenia, Cameroon, Chile, China, Ireland and Lebanon – she made a #FoodHeroes music video to spread the message of how young people can take action to make agri-food systems more sustainable. These school children are from different countries, upbringings, cultures and languages, but they all share the united opinion that youth action is needed to save our planet.   

Luiza Khachatryan and her classmates from the Ararat Marz region of Armenia, also enjoyed participating in the initiative. Her experience made her reflect on the importance of healthy food choices, reducing food waste, learning about how to grow food, and much more.   

 “I love our village, I love the nature, the trees and animals. They give us food and shelter. If we do not take care of them, we will not survive ourselves.”  

At the Junior World Food Day on 5 October 2021, these food heroes are releasing a music video to spread a powerful message through song and dance and inspire even more students to get involved. They believe you can become a food hero at any age. Their goal is to encourage youth to be change makers and advocates for a hunger-free and sustainable world.    

“Our actions are the future and the future’s in our hands. We can all become food heroes. Do it for the people. Do it for the land.”   

GMCBeats and Kabin Studio Coordinator Garry McCarthy from Ireland noted how much he enjoyed this multi-lingual, multi-cultural experience. It was both challenging and rewarding as schools in all six countries responded well to a food learning experience through music. The project made him consider how food unites us all across borders and sectors, and the importance of healthy diets.  

The #FoodHeroes music video has inspired a dance challenge on Tik-Tok and Instagram to add to the call for action.
