FAO Legal Diagnostic Tools: Capitalizing on the Lessons Learned and the Good Practices for the Pastoralism Sector

14/11/2024 14/11/2024

On Thursday, 14 November 2024, the Development Law Service of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the Animal Production Health and the Rural Transformation and Gender Equality divisions, invites experts and stakeholders to a virtual exchange on FAO-developed legal diagnostic tools.

This interactive webinar will showcase various FAO legal diagnostic tools, followed by discussions on experiences and lessons learned from their development and application.

The insights gathered will inform the creation of a new diagnostic tool focused on supporting pastoralist communities by addressing legal gaps in pastoralism-specific policy frameworks. This tool is being developed under the "Water and Food Security Initiative for Africa 2" (IESA 2) project to strengthen resource access and sustainable livelihoods for pastoralists in the Sahel region, with a broader application in view for the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (2026).

Expected outcomes of the meeting:

  • The development of the tool for pastoralism and its current state are shared with FAO colleagues and experts for their inputs and future use.
  • The existing FAO legal diagnostic tools are explained by FAO experts.
  • The methodology and applicability of the tools are discussed.
  • The recommendations are drawn for the development of the upcoming legal diagnostic tool related to pastoralism.
