Regional Workshop on the Legislative Guide on Combating Crimes in the Fisheries Sector
Nairobi, 13-15 February 2024. The Development Law Service participated in a regional workshop held in Nairobi, Kenya, from 13 to 15 February, organized by the UNODC under its FishNet project. This workshop, funded by the Norwegian Development Cooperation Agency (NORAD), was the platform for the launch of the UNODC Legislative Guide on Combatting Crimes in the Fisheries Sector for Anglophone African countries. LEGN has contributed to the development of this guide since 2022.
About 18 participants representing a variety of national authorities (fisheries, general attorney’s office, environment, prosecutor’s office, police) of Kenya, Ghana, Namibia, and South Africa took part in the workshop. The training raised awareness about the guide’s content and engaged participants into resolving mock case studies relating to crimes in the fisheries sector, including the applicability of the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime.
LEGN and UNODC are planning to launch the guide to a broader audience through a joint side event to an international conference in the first semester of 2024. Another regional workshop is planned for Francophone African countries in the second semester of 2024.
