The Development Law Service announces a new collaboration between the Global Water Partnership and FAO’s AQUALEX

13/03/2025

Legal and policy overviews are now available on the IWRM Action Hub

The integration of AQUALEX data into country profiles is a new feature on the Global Water Partnership’s (GWP) Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) Action Hub.

AQUALEX is a thematic database of FAOLEX, one of the world's largest online repositories of national laws, regulations and policies on food, agriculture and natural resources management. AQUALEX provides free access to national and international legal and policy instruments regarding water, using FAOLEX abstracts and indexing information about each text. In addition, AQUALEX provides, for an increasing number of selected countries and transboundary waters, legal profiles summarizing the water regulatory framework. AQUALEX can be used as a legal mapping tool for an in-depth understanding of IWRM relationships through legislation and policies.

The Global Water Partnership is a network of almost 3000 water organizations that promotes the effective, efficient, and sustainable management of water resources around the world. GWP provides a platform where water actors at global, regional, national, and local levels can share water insights, access technical assistance and policy guidance for the smart management of water resources. Its IWRM Action Hub is a global knowledge platform which supports actors to implement IWRM, share knowledge and expertise about their implementation experiences, and bring relevant stakeholders together to improve the way water is managed around the world.

The FAO Development Law Service (LEGN) is excited about this achievement as it supports greater visibility for AQUALEX and the work of LEGN and FAO. This collaboration will provide IWRM Action Hub users with a one-click option to access a comprehensive legal and policy overview of a country’s water management system by AQUALEX. Each country profile now combines the SDG 6.5.1 scores, relevant case studies, and other valuable country resources with AQUALEX’s detailed legal overview, creating a robust tool for understanding and advancing water governance.
