FAO supports the Forestry Development Authority with training workshop in Fishtown, River Gee

05/10/2020

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations travelled to River Gee, Liberia, with the Forestry Development Authority (FDA) to support their training workshop on community forestry management planning (CFMP). The CFMP in Liberia aims to provide information about the state and nature of forests within a Community Forest Management Area. The team led my FDA hosted a weeklong workshop with participants and town leaders. The workshop participants were provided with personal protective equipment, divided into teams and taken into the forest by team leaders for training.

FAO is supporting four activities throughout the extension period. Initially FAO will provide technical assistance to the CFMP consultant in the development of an inventory methodology for community forests. Secondly, FAO will facilitate the practical component of the capacity development activities, which aim to train National Forest Inventory staff and local communities to measure and monitor their forests. Thirdly, FAO will support the implementation of the planned inventory activities in the three authorized community forests.

The project includes 21 days of field enumeration activities that will be organized and carried out by team leaders from preparation to data collection. Attendees were very engaged in the workshop, which saw a high number of female participation. FAO and FDA continue to push for the awareness of community forestry management planning for the betterment of Liberia and its communities.
