General Situation during May 2025 Forecast for June 2025

Moroccan locust (DMA) hopper development was completed, mass fledging and mating had started in all Central Asia (CA) by the end of the reporting period, as well as egg-laying in the southern areas. DMA hopper development continued in Azerbaijan, Georgia and the Russian Federation. The DMA situation was classified as a threat by all CA countries and as calm in the Caucasus. Italian locust (CIT) hatching started and hopper development continued in Caucasus and Central Asia (CCA). The situation was classified as threat in most CCA countries where it is present, except in Caucasus and in the Russian Federation. Migratory locust (LMI) hatching started in Kazakhstan and in the Russian Federation. By the end of June, DMA will complete its lifecycle in CA while mass egg-laying will start in Caucasus and the Russian Federation. CIT fledging and mating will occur in southern regions of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. CIT hopper development will continue in Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, the Russian Federation and northern regions of Kazakhstan. LMI hatching will continue and its hopper development will take place in Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation. By the end of May and since the start of campaign, a total area of 1 619 547 hectares (ha) have been treated in CCA, representing an increase of 53% with respect to the same period the previous year (1 059 361 ha in 2024), which is related to the locust situation in Central Asia.
