Markets and Trade

Strengthening capacities for effective trade and market-related policies in agriculture

FAO developed the e-learning courses Trade, Food Security and Nutrition (TFSN) and Agriculture in International Trade Agreements (AITA). These courses are designed specifically for government representatives and agricultural sector stakeholders involved in formulating and implementing trade policies and agricultural sector programmes.

Available in both facilitated and self-paced formats, TFSN and AITA courses can be taken in Arabic, English, French, Russian, and Spanish. Both types of courses are offered free of charge. Learn more here.

Capacity development courses:

Trade, Food Security and Nutrition (TFSN)

Both the trade and development agendas are paying increased attention to the relationship between trade and food security. Trade is recognized as one of the means for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The TFSN course addresses the linkages between trade and food security and seeks to strengthen capacities to develop and implement evidence-based trade policies. To accomplish this task, the course takes into consideration the need for economic growth and structural transformation, as well as food security and nutrition concerns.

Agriculture in International Trade Agreements (AITA)

Global and regional agreements set out the rules for countries’ trade policies and define the policy space for public support to agriculture. Therefore, it is critical to balance the achievement of national policy objectives related to agriculture and food security with the obligations under trade agreements.

The AITA course explores the treatment of agriculture in the multilateral trading system and in regional trade agreements (RTAs) and aims to support policy makers to develop and implement appropriate agricultural development and food security strategies.
