FAO’s Regional Office for Africa together with the FAO Markets and Trade Division, and in collaboration with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), announce the launch of a facilitated FAO e-learning course: Trade, Food Security and Nutrition in Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA), 23 May - 19 June 2022.


Course objectives

Through active learning, participants will emerge from the course better able to:

• assess the challenges and opportunities posed by greater openness to trade for food security and nutrition;

• describe different types of trade policy measures, their role in promoting food security and nutrition, and considerations for trade policy design and implementation; and

• discuss the key global policy and regulatory frameworks governing trade, food security and nutrition, including the WTO Agreement on Agriculture and Agenda 2030.

Target audience

This course targets government representatives who are directly involved in the formulation and implementation of agricultural policies and programmes in ESA. These may include officials from Ministries of Agriculture, Livestock, Trade, Industry, Finance, Economy, as well as Food Safety, Sanitary, Phytosanitary, Veterinary, and other agencies. Private sector representatives, and researchers with an interest in agricultural policy and trade analysis are also encouraged to apply.


Course outline

International experts who possess a wealth of practical experience will facilitate and act as mentors for the course, ensuring that real-world examples are integrated into the coursework. Webinars will be offered as part of this dynamic course. A United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) certificate of completion will be issued to participants who successfully complete all course-related assignments and assessments.

The course will be conducted in English over a period of four weeks, organized in three units.

• Introduction to Trade, Food Security and Nutrition

• Trade Policy Supportive of Food Security and Nutrition

• Governance of Trade, Food Security and Nutrition


How to register

This course is offered free of charge. Spaces are limited and participants will be chosen based on a selection process conducted by FAO, taking into account factors including geographical distribution and gender balance. Before receiving final confirmation of selection, participants will be requested to obtain permission to participate in the course from their direct supervisor.
