Promoting mountain products to improve local economies and livelihoods

As a strategy to develop mountain economies and better livelihoods, the Mountain Partnership Secretariat and Slow Food jointly developed a voluntary labelling scheme for mountain products to support small mountain producers from developing countries. The side event will present the main achievements of the first phase of the Mountain Partnership Products (MPP) Initiative and will offer the opportunity to discuss sustainable food systems, market linkages and the role of partnerships with representatives from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Swiss Permanent Mission to FAO, Slow Food and FAO representatives. Practical experiences from two pilot cases of the MPP Initiative will be shared. | Understanding landscape and watershed management in mountains

Watershed and landscape management are integrated approaches that promote intersectoral cooperation and support the generation of benefits for people and the environment. During the side event, the new FAO publication Watershed Management in Action will be launched. The publication presents the lessons learned from the implementation of watershed management field projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America and provides concrete recommendations for practitioners. The side event will also be an opportunity for an exchange of views on recent experiences in watershed and landscape management in mountain areas and for reflection on the challenges and opportunities of these approaches in mountains. |
Education in mountains
Location: Pakistan Room (A127)
The side event will look at education and its role in sustainable mountain development. Lack of mountain related capacity development programmes is a concrete obstacle to the sustainable development of mountains around the world. This side event will explore the role of national and international education institutions for knowledge generation and dissemination to address the ecological and socio-economic complexity of mountain areas. It will also provide an opportunity for the sharing of experiences by showcasing the International Programme on Research and Training on Sustainable Management of Mountain Areas (IPROMO) and other initiatives worldwide. | Science and research for evidence-informed policy and action on the ground: experiences and outlook in mountain-specific cases

In this side event, convened and chaired by the Mountain Research Initiative, invited academics and practitioners from diverse backgrounds share their experiences with science and research in addressing key policy and practice-relevant problems in mountain-specific contexts. Covering topics such as water, land degradation, migration, waste and natural resource management for emissions reduction, each presentation will also reflect on the role of knowledge and information exchange in the domains of their respective work both within global and in specific cases in Latin America, Africa, and Papua New Guinea. |
Launch of Mountains 2018

Mountains 2018 is an international conference that will bring together scholars, professionals, policy-makers and others involved with multiple aspects of the mountain world. It seeks to stimulate and disseminate knowledge based on lessons learned from scientific research and practical experiences related to promoting sustainable development in mountain territories, including how mountains can contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals. Mountains 2018, to be held on 11-15 December 2018 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will comprise the III Workshop on Sustainable Development in Mountain Regions and the II International Conference on Research for Sustainable Development in Mountain Regions. | Andean Mountain Initiative

Under the framework of the Mountain Partnership, the seven governments of the Andean countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela) have consolidated a regional platform, the Andean Mountain Initiative (AMI). The AMI's main purpose is the coordination of actions, strategies and policies that are being implemented in the mountain areas of the Andean countries in order to achieve a better convergence between public and private, national, regional and international levels, with the aim of designing and implementing comprehensive mountain policies. The side event is aimed at showcasing the AMI to all Mountain Partnership members and defining relevant opportunities for joint action between governments and other stakeholders.
