International Workshop on Mediterranean Mountains

Treia, Le Marche, Italy
From: 05.07.2017 to: 06.07.2017

The Italian Ministry of the Environment together with the Italian Federation of Parks and Natural Reserves (Federparchi) will organize an international workshop on the mountains of the Mediterranean Basin on 5-6 July, in Treia, Italy, during the annual Soft Economy Festival. This edition of the Festival will focus on the economies of disadvantaged areas and territories, particularly in light of the ongoing challenges facing communities and settlements in the Central Italian Apennines following the series of earthquakes in 2016 that negatively affected local economies.

The aim of the workshop is to bring people together to identify strategies and actions that will highlight the peculiarities and potentials of the Mediterranean Basin mountain chains. The topics that will be addressed during the workshop have been derived from the recommendations on Mediterranean Mountains approved at the 2004 International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Congress in Bangkok, Thailand (see here).

Given the location and period in which the workshop will take place - close to the Monti Sibillini and Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga national parks, almost one year after the earthquakes - special attention during the event will be given to the economic and social reconstruction of the affected areas of the Apennines.

The official hashtag for this event is #seminarioSymbola
