Mount Kenya Three Peaks Climb

Mount Kenya National Park, Kenya
From: 16.03.2017 to: 21.03.2017

The Mount Kenya Trust (MKT) invites you to come and climb the three peaks of Mount Kenya to raise vital mountain conservation funds for the MKT, an NGO working to protect the wildlife, forest and people of Africa's second highest peak. The climbing options available include Lenana (non-technical), Nelion (technical) and Batian (technical). African Ascents will also offer their skills and time to take participants there.

The 2016 Three Peaks Climb event raised almost 1.5 million Kenya Shillings (KS), enabling the MKT to employ two new Mount Kenya Horse Patrol team members and construct a horse patrol satellite camp. This satellite camp acts as an outpost for the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the Mount Kenya Horse Patrol Team (HPT), further expanding the range and effectiveness of these teams. The HPT was formed in late 2011 through a partnership between the KWS and MKT, with key support and infrastructure donated from Kisima Farm. The HPT ride a group of ten hardy Ethiopian ponies, well-suited for high altitudes and rough mountain terrain, in an area of the northern moorlands that, before the establishment of the HPT, was a hotspot for poaching and other illegal resource extraction.

Since the HPT started to patrol this area, illegal activities within the area have reduced considerably: patrol data shows a 75 percent decrease in poaching incidences between 2013 and 2015. The team also plays a key role in monitoring the elephants that use the area and seasonally migrate in and out of the reserve through the Mount Kenya Elephant Corridor.
