From: 26.04.2023 to: 26.04.2023

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared 2022 as the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development at the proposal of the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic. The corresponding resolution (A/RES/76/129) was sponsored by 94 governments and adopted at the plenary meeting of the 76th session of the UNGA on 16 December 2021.

As per the resolution, the Mountain Partnership was invited to facilitate the observance of this International Year. With the Support of its Secretariat, the Mountain Partnership organized the online opening ceremony of the International Year on 28 April 2022, which saw the participation of many high-level officials, including Qu Dongyu, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and Sadyr Japarov, President of the Kyrgyz Republic. It further supported the organization of 55 events, developed a global communication campaign, established and coordinated an Open-ended Scientific Committee that has produced several policy briefs to support the policy-science dialogue for sustainable mountain development.

A global high-level ceremony will conclude the celebrations of the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development 2022. It aims to look ahead and engage United Nations agencies and other relevant partners to define a joint roadmap for the protection of vulnerable mountain ecosystems while building the resilience of mountain peoples, within the framework of the Mountain Partnership.

The event will be held on Wednesday, 26 April 2023 at 12.30–14.00 CEST
